Project Brief

The aim of this project was to conduct a Concept Engineering study for a client’s plant based in Bradford. The project was to investigate the possibility of increasing production by 25% with a future growth manufacturing target of a further 25% being factored into the design.

Our Solution

Our solution was to firstly look at the concept phase, which included specification/organising a number of pre-planning surveys and investigations (power monitoring, borehole sampling, topographical survey, underground utilities survey), review of the existing processes and identification of opportunities to debottleneck the drying process. Throughout this project we did the full planning process and project management.

There were many process engineering deliverables within this project which included a heat & mass balance, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), initial hazard studies, process description and equipment and line list. We also conducted a 3D scan of the new plant location and this resulted in a 3D model which enabled the identification of tie-in points to existing equipment and enabled preliminary routing of pipework to avoid clashes.

We then proceeded to carry out Civil, Structural, and Architectural work to prepare a number of building options that took into account constructibility and interfacing with existing buildings. Finally, we conducted some further work on the equipment layout for each of the building options, taking into account operability and accessibility for maintenance.

EC&I engineering deliverables consisted of reviewing the current capabilities of existing transformers and switchgear through to specifications of new or replacement equipment, cable routing, equipment and schedules, HVAC and fire detection. All of the deliverables were designed and developed to current British Standards.

Project Result

In conclusion this was a successful project taking around 17 weeks from starting to completion. The Concept Phase was delivered on-time, on-budget and to quality standards and is currently awaiting stage gate approval. We continue to support the client in a design and site management role assisting in the development and delivery of projects through a site tendering process with the clients engineering and procurement team.
