Guidance for ATmosphere EXplosive [ATEX] Regulations

The full title is the “Explosive Atmospheres Directive (ATEX 137)”. The Explosive Atmospheres Directive (ATEX 137) is a European Union Directive which requires employers to protect workers from the risk of explosive atmospheres.

Guidance for Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmosphere Regulations [DSEAR]

Dangerous substances can put peoples’ safety at risk from fire and explosion. DSEAR puts duties on employers and the self-employed to protect people from risks to their safety from fires, explosions and similar events in the workplace, this includes members of the public who may be put at risk by work activity.

Safety Integrity Levels [SIL]

Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is defined as a relative level of risk-reduction provided by a safety function, or to specify a target level of risk reduction. In simple terms, SIL is a measurement of performance required for a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF).

Safety related systems in accordance with IEC61508 and IEC61511

IEC 61511 is a technical standard which sets out practices in the engineering of systems that ensure the safety of an industrial process through the use of instrumentation. Such systems are referred to as Safety Instrumented Systems. The title of the standard is “Functional safety – Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector“. IEC 61508 is an international standard of rules applied in industry. It is titled “Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems”. IEC 61508 is intended to be a basic functional safety standard applicable to all kinds of industry. It defines functional safety as: “part of the overall safety relating to the EUC (Equipment Under Control) and the EUC control system which depends on the correct functioning of the E/E/PE safety-related systems, other technology safety-related systems and external risk reduction facilities.”
