Employment Matters – Process Engineer

PROCESS ENGINEER

A growing project management company with a firm base providing services into the chemical, food
processing and pharmaceutical / health care products industries is looking for a self starting process
engineer to work from our Brighouse, West Yorkshire offices.
The candidate will take a leading role in varied projects within the company. All will involve working
closely with our clients. You should be able to interpret the client’s wishes to develop process flow
sheets, carrying out DSEAR and other safety assessments, prepare process proposals and budgets
costs and see these through to the detailed process engineering and commissioning that would arise
from these projects. You will work closely with instrumentation and control engineers in the
company developing both User Requirement and Functional Design Specifications.
Most of the work is in the UK, but it may be office or site based. This work would suit someone with
a degree in chemical engineering or similar and a good working knowledge of the process industry
and the design work required to support projects in that industry. The applicant should be
ambitious in their wish to develop their career, be able to work confidently with others and
communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Purpose
To support the operations of the company by providing the process engineering input to
projects within the chemical, food, pharmaceutical and health care industries targeted by
the company.

Main duties

  • To carry out process engineering design in support of company projects
  • To consult with the company’s clients to correctly interpret their process requirements and make proposals which fit these desires.
  • To work with other engineers in the company to develop proposal specifications and cost estimates.
  • To support detail design of projects to ensure compliance with process engineering requirements including compliance with current legislation and rules.
  • To commission as appropriate the projects undertaken by the company.
  • To show initiative in identifying and dealing with problems arising in the projects undertaken.
  • To maintain good communications with the company’s engineers and the company’s clients.
  • To maintain written records of all projects.
  • To create and maintain filing systems for all projects.
  • To deal sensitively with people, situations and confidential material.
  • To maintain an inquisitive mind, keeping abreast with the developments within the process industry and the legislation that controls it.
  • To work on sites within the UK or overseas as required by the project.
  • To carry out any other reasonable request made by the company management.
  • Skill sets

    • A first degree in chemical engineering or related subject.
    • Be working towards membership of a recognised controlling body in the discipline.
    • Have a working knowledge of the chemical process industry and the process engineering support functions necessary in that industry. This is likely to have been obtained through work in a manufacturing engineering office or through process engineering contractors.
    • Be able to communicate with clarity in both spoken and written environments.
    • Work without supervision but ensure the agreement and co-operation of colleagues.
    • Be able to be self critical and review decisions, calculations and documentation for relevance and accuracy.
    • Be computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet calculations and data base manipulation.
    • Be able to prepare Process and Instrumentation Diagrams and manipulate simple CAD draughting systems associated with these.
    • Pursue a flexible approach to working time and environment within the constraints of the project and office custom.

      MECHANICAL ENGINEER

      A growing project management company with a firm base providing services into the chemical, food
      processing and pharmaceutical / health care products industries is looking for a self starting
      mechanical engineer to work from our Brighouse, West Yorkshire offices.
      The candidate will take a leading role in varied projects within the company. All will involve working
      closely with our clients. You should be able to interpret the client’s wishes to develop as a key part
      of the engineering team, you will be leading design and draughtsman & help solve challenging
      engineering problems. Will involve interfacing with component suppliers, specialist consultants and
      internal variable disciplined engineers.
      Main duties
      Interpret and understand product specifications, data sheets, and customer requirements
      Assist the sales team to respond to technical queries raised by vendors, review and approval of
      design drawings, documents or instructions
      Perform design calculations in accordance with ASME and other standards
      Design product components and assemblies
      Prepare detailed sketches of new products and assist designers in developing and checking drawings
      Generate Bills of Materials, Engineering Change Notices, and review the work of other Engineers and
      Designers
      Prepare specifications for purchased products
      Design, review and approve models, drawings and P&IDs
      Prepare technical reports and presentations.
      Familiarity and experience with using ISO 9001, BS EN 60079
      Familiarity and experience with tolerance, fit and general engineering design

      What we will be looking for in you:

      It is essential that you come from the Chemical or Oil and Gas industry. Someone who has worked
      with ASME standards, has experience of small analytical piping systems with high accuracy and can
      work well in a team. We are looking for a potential leader to come in and want to move up the
      ladder quickly, and help drive the department forward with creative thinking and conceptual
      engineering ideas. Someone who has over 5 years’ experience and has had hands on, as well as
      design experience

      Essential skills:

      • 2:I Master’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering
      • 5 years + experience in an Engineering environment
      • Knowledge of design practices and drafting standards
      • Full project lifecycle knowledge
      • Desirable:

        • Knowledge of welding, structures, process piping, small-bore tubing and systems
        • Chartered status (or working towards becoming chartered)
        • Knowledge and experience of ASME, ISO, ATEX/IEC/NEC regulations
        • Knowledge and experience of UK, European, US or other industry standards and practices within the natural gas processing, distribution and analytical industries
        • Competent user of AutoDesk Inventor
        • Knowledge of FEA

          Electrical Design Engineer

          • Attending client meetings, (Initial Sales Review, Progress, Project Closeout, take minutes)
          • Project Control : documentation , drawings, revisions, Quotation presentation final review prior to leaving the premises, Sales quotation value entry etc
